Arthroplasty (Joint Replacement)

Total Knee Replacement

OVERVIEW

Total Knee Replacement, also known as knee arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to replace a damaged or worn-out knee joint with an artificial implant. This intervention is often recommended for patients suffering from severe knee pain and restricted mobility due to conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or knee fractures. Dr du Plessis performs knee arthroplasty with the aim to restore function and alleviate pain in the knee joint.

Types of knee replacement indications:

Total knee replacement may be indicated for a variety of underlying causes, including:

  1. Osteoarthritis: The degeneration of joint cartilage and the underlying bone.
  2. Rheumatoid Arthritis: A chronic inflammatory condition affecting the synovial lining of joints.
  3. Post-traumatic arthritis: Resulting from a severe knee injury or fracture.
  4. Avascular necrosis: Reduced blood supply to the knee joint, leading to bone death.
TREATMENT
Before recommending surgery, Dr Jason du Plessis will conduct a thorough evaluation, including a review of the patient's medical history, imaging studies, and a physical examination. Once surgery is deemed necessary, the patient will be informed about the procedure, potential risks, and expected outcomes.

The surgical process involves:
  • Preparation: The patient is prepared for surgery, including administering anaesthesia.
  • Incision: Dr Jason du Plessis makes an incision to access the knee joint.
  • Reshaping: Damaged bone and cartilage are removed, and the joint is prepared for prosthetic components.
  • Implantation: Artificial components are securely implanted, replacing the damaged portions of the knee joint.
  • Closure: The incision is closed, and the patient begins the recovery process.
